Going Postal, 5 Days A Week
I just read this story in USA Today about the current state of the US Postal Service (Not the tech-emo band). According to their reports, the USPS lost out on $2.8 Billion last year and is looking even worse this year.
In order to try and save some money there have been many changes, layoffs and office shut-downs. The most interesting plan though, was proposed by the Postmaster General John Potter.
His idea is to ditch Saturday service and move to a 5 days a week system. This theory has come under much criticism in Washington. I think we should look at the positives of a 5 Day Postal System.
- Most other Government offices are closed on the weekends. Why not the USPS?
- Who the hell wants bills on a Saturday?
- This would eliminate any issues of receiving mail on Saturday, that you wouldn’t want your wife to see (such as but not limited to porn, child support bills from previous hidden marriage, letters from said child inquiring of your whereabouts…etc.). You would only get those on the weekdays when you could come home on your lunch and dispose and/or hide them.
- It would save the US Government $3.5 Billion per year!
- If you really need to ship or mail anything on Saturday, there’s always UPS, FedEx, DHL, etc.
Besides, shouldn’t we all be getting this crap in email-form by now anyways? Its 2009 people!
