In an effort to gear up for the Awards season, I am trying to watch all the movies that will likely have a chance at best actor/best movie nominations. So far we’ve got these two, Gran Torino and Milk. Next up are The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Man on Wire*.
Slumdog Millionaire is my current front runner for the Best Film category. If anyone is bored and has 12 bucks to blow, go see this movie in the theaters. No joke. The music is amazing in it and it will sound 100 times better at the theater than on your shitty TV. Other than the music though, the movie is absolutely perfect. Not too many will go see this movie because it is a foreign film (it has bottom billing at most theaters on Fandango) but it may be the best movie I saw all year.
Frost/Nixon. No one person’s performance in this movie particularly excited me as I went into this one with high expectations. The cast, as a whole though, works well together and makes this a good, not great, movie. I must say though, Sam Rockwell’s performance was a little redeeming after watching him in Choke yesterday, a favorite book of mine that did not end up well as a movie.
*I started watching Man on Wire last night but the copy I attained was without subtitles for the approximate 25% of the movie that is spoken in french. I did not sleep because it was boring though. I fell asleep because it was late and I was tired.
