Stats Teachers Are All Lying Bastards

I have taken 4 different statistic classes since enrolling in college and I found something in common with all of them.

At the beginning of the semester when the instructor is introducing himself and the class they always say the same thing, or some variation of it:

“This isn’t going to be some boring math class.  We are going to apply everything to situations that will effect everyday life and will be useful to you.”

The sad thing is that the classes ALWAYS end up being boring math classes with stupid equations that I don’t understand and will never be able to apply to normal life.  The only way this information becomes useful is if you become a statistician.

Crim 50 and Crim 170 are two examples.  Neither class has ever successfully been able to connect our learning of statistics to anything in the criminal justice field.  If you want someone to work as a statistician in any given Law Enforcement agency, you shouldn’t and wont hire an officer who took a few stats classes.  You will hire a statistician who knows stats.
